First Impressions. This is the second Leopard 1 from Meng. Much of it is inevitably based on their original 1A3/1A4 kit. The wheels and grilles have been improved as far as the hull is concerned, but the turret is completey new and very nicely done. The Revell Leopard 1A5 has been the standard until recently.

r/modelmakers • Finally finished my first airplane: Eduard Zero (1/48). I have learned a lot. Especially to plan ahead and be patient. Didn’t took many pictures of the plane as it has a lot of paint smudges, finger prints and dust varnished in. Figures turned out better then expected.

Big red T-72 This build started first as a joke, when I suggested to assemble the same model with Sergey Kovalev. Well, who knew that in the end I will have big red tank in my collection? :) This kit is a new product from Meng, and therefore it was even more interesting to assemble model as soon as possible. Let's starts our build from the beginning. Chinese manufacturer is quite famous for its attention to small details in its kits. This tank is not an exclusion and on the photo above you can appreciate welding strips, which are carefully molded in plastic. Whole process starts with lower hull half, which is molded in form of tub-like element. Of course, you will have to add different suspension elements as well as self-entrenching device plate, but those would look very realistic on your tank. One of the main features on this tank - workable suspension, which should come handy for diorama builders. On the photo above you can see all torsions needed for one side. Note that several will have to be assembled with extra parts, which shouldn't be glued. No worries with alignment, because Meng supplies special jig for proper arms positioning. You just fix this thing on tank side, and apply glue on the necessary spots. Be careful and read manual, so that you will know where to apply glue and have workable suspension. With all torsions installed lower half looks more complex. Now we can move on to the top segment. This part of the tank will be even more detailed. On the photo above you can see dry fitment with lower half. I would recommend to leave this part separately from lower half, so that it will be easier to paint both and install tracks. Each roadwheel should be assembled out of several parts. Note that inside there will be special vinyl polycap, which shouldn't be glued on order to have movable wheels. You have to glue wheels with two special points on the inside. Well, in my kit some pins were broken off, so I had to assemble those parts with careful alignment. No worries about painting, because manufacturer included special PE template for the proper paintjob. With all stowage bins glued into place, you will have to install engine cover. This one is designed as separate part to make possible to display engine, which you will have to buy separately. Well, I didn't spend my money on the engine, so this cover should be assembled in shut position. Here I've had problems with fitment and alignments, because panel sits too tight and might just pop out of its place. Here you can see workable suspension in action. Yeah, great feature if you would like to properly position model in your diorama. Don't forget that top part is still not glued. Side skirts installation shouldn't be difficult as long as you check alignment with front and rear fenders. Note also unpainted PE parts for engine meshes. Surprisingly, there is minor turret detailing, and on the photo above you can see one of featured parts. This feature should come handy if you would like to open hatch and don't want to have emptiness inside. Here part is painted and ready to be installed into the turret. Turret assembly starts from "nude" one-piece element, which will have to be covered with armor. On the photo above you can see photo "before" application of all necessary parts. Armor panels which should be attached onto skirts might be tricky, so take your time and use extra-liquid glue for the proper connection. On the rear segment of tank you will have to glue fuel drum holders, log and tow cables. For the log I can say that it was tough to fit because one of pins didn't go into designated spot. Some modelers don't like standard machine gun, which comes with this kit, but in my opinion it looks fine for this scale. Yes, professionals might get some advanced resin version, but kit version should be ok for out-of-box build. Here you can see turret after application of all necessary parts. Note commander's shield with transparent segment. Be ready to assemble smoke dischargers out of several pieces. Main barrel should be assembled out several pieces. Take your time, glue halves with care and you will be able to avoid gaps or any other possible problems. On my vehicle I decided to make barrel detachable, so that it will be easier to transport model. Tracks... Those parts are nice, but their assembly process is quite tedious. You have to repeat the same operation link after link. In assembled state they should be movable, but you will have to spend some time to connect links together. I decided not to assemble full length for each side, because they won't be visible on the finished vehicle. On the photo above you can see the right length, so that shortened tracks won't be noticed by viewers. :) Wheels and drive sprockets were painted separately. Of course, first I've applied layer of grey primer, and then used Rubber color from AK Interactive. AK Interactive. Next step was to use PE template in order to get nice finish on wheels. Photo above displays final result. As you saw, I've used black color on wheels and drive sprockets, but for hull parts I decided to use NATO Black from AK Interactive. This shade should look a bit different from simple black and add more interest to the appearance of the finished tank. I have to mention marking guides from Meng, which offer two wrong schemes. One is for Biathlon vehicle, where you get only one out of three necessary symbols. What you do with other signs? Well, Meng suggest to paint them with brush. Of course, this is not a right approach to the subject, and if you can't include symbols due to copyright reasons - just don't include this camo into your kit. Another problematic scheme - sand-colored tank for arms expo, which was actually shown on different version of the tank that can't be assembled with kit! After investigating all those issues, I decided to replicate tank from 2014 Tank Biathlon trials. This one can be replicated with kit parts and decals. There are several vehicles on competition - blue, green, red, yellow and grey. On the photo above you can see what color was my choice. :) Camo was applied freehand. While paints were drying, I decided to weather tracks and drive sprockets. For metal segments I've applied dark steel pigment from AK Interactive. AK Interactive. Tracks were sprayed with several shades of brown in order to get dusty look. Later I rubbed all raised parts with dark steel pigment. Here you can see tracks installed onto lower hull part. Looks fine in my opinion. :) On the photo above - finished camo on our tank. Looks too bright, but no worries because it will be shaded. Note that I applied lightened red on some panels. Before decals application I covered whole paintwork with gloss lacquer from AK Interactive - Gauze Agent, which can be applied with airbrush and will give you nice gloss and shiny surface. As for weathering, I didn't want vehicle to be very used and damaged. Therefore basic procedures were used - black wash and light dust medium from AK Interactive. AK Interactive. Here you can see other side of the vehicle with applied decals. Note fresh spot of paint on the rear part - I accidentally scratched a bit of paint with thinner and had to reapply it with brush. Well, in the end we have nice shades variety on the skirts. And here you can check left side. I've applied special shade for turret periscopes, you can find it in "Tank Accessories" kit from AK Interactive. Next step was matte lacquer application and pigments dry-brushing. Next step was to use European Earth pigment to hide fresh paint on the right skirt. On the photo above you can see it applied on the tank. Nevertheless, all those dust stains looked too bright and "jumped out" on the tank camouflage. Therefore I decided to airbrush thin layer of pigment fixer from Wilder. Wilder. Here you can see result, which looks more realistic and even. The same pigment was applied on wheels as well. Machine gun shouldn't be red, right? That's why I covered it with gunmetal shade from Tamiya. Bullets were painted with brass color from AK Interactive. On the photo below you can see closeup to front skirt from the left side. Overall build project turned out to be quite interesting experience. From one side I can say that molding quality and fitment are on the top level, and there were no issues at all. Detailing here is also excellent, but some design solutions leave you wondering why small parts should be assembled out of several parts, while large parts are copied as one-piece example here - log with holders, which can't be assembled separately. Another thing - fuel tank holders, which can be folded only with plastic modification, not with standard parts. Tracks assembly is also quite tedious process, so get ready to spend some time on this. Of course, you shouldn't forget about poor choice of marking options, where you can't replicate two versions due to different reasons. I have no doubt that in the future Meng will release different version of the tank, so let's hope for more logical solutions in those new kits.
In 1981, when the Soviet Union knew that new main battle tanks like M1 and Leopard 2 would enter military service with NATO forces, they immediately decided to upgrade the T-72 main battle tank maintain the deterrence against the opponent. This upgrade project was called “Object 184”. In 1984, this latest T-72 variant was named T-72B. As per the Russian tradition, some of those upgraded tanks had simpler equipment and they were not capable of firing gun-launched missiles. Those tanks were called T-72B1. Compared to T-72A, the most obvious changes on the T-72B/B1 were the new turret nicknamed Dolly Parton by NATO armies and the Kontact-1 ERA blocks covering the hull and the turret. A total of 3,435 tanks were produced by the Soviet between 1985 and 1989. The T-72B1 tanks have been in service with Russian Army for a long time. Before being replaced by the T-72B3 or T-90, they are the most trusted tanks in the armored forces. Kit Info This 1/35 scale Russian Main Battle Tank T-72B1 plastic model kit features clear lights, periscopes and optical equipment, separate anti-radiation applique parts, realistic and movable torsion bar suspension, easy-to-assemble workable tracks. The SPS-028 V-84 engine can be installed inside (sold separately). Fine PE parts are included and 9 paint schemes are provided. Length: 289mm Width:109mm Construction instructions
I started this project right after the Arco dei Fileni build. The concept centers around an ongoing conflict, in Syria and involves a modern MBT, still in use today. I not normally build modern vehicles – leave Russian ones – but this one I wanted to complete since quite a while. You can revisit the build report here: Short history: The T-72 is one of the most successful modern tank designs in history, with over built in various versions. The service history with the Russian Army dates to 1973 but the vehicle is still in active use today in many countries around the world. Amongst its users are many former Soviet peripheral states but also NATO members like Poland for instance. The low cost, high maneuverability and the deadly efficient 125mm smooth bore auto-loaded main gun are the main factors to its success and the tank is likely to be around for many years to come. The vehicle has a crew of three (driver, gunner and commander). The second picture below shows an AV variant that took an RPG hit on the leftmost ERA skirt... This build depicts a T-72B variant in a Syrian setting in 1:35 scale. Upon the open entry of Russia to assist the Syrian Arab regime under Bashar al-Assad, some T-72B variants ended up in service there. There is ample documentation around that I could identify in support of this. Although the usual T-72AV and T-72M variants make up the bulk of the Syrian Arab Armored force, the B variant entered via older Russian stocks to stop the gap appearing because of the high attrition rates nominal for a conflict peppered by street fighting and urban skirmishes. These T-72 machines suffer heavily as the next pictures show. The kit: This is MENG’s TS-033 kit representing its go at the T-72B1 variant. The difference between various versions is sometimes minimal but this kit features the Kontakt Reactive Armor ERA kit that is to protect the crew from RPG’s and all sorts of (wire) guided missiles in this urban setting. The build: The build is well detailed in the WiP thread mentioned previously. I wanted to represent the vehicle on a dio base indicative of the urban environment it encounters in Syria. What is more urban and ‘civilized’ than a highway? The vehicle build is virtually OOB with some damage featured (lost fender and scratches). The painting sequence was as follows: (1) primer acrylic black from the rattle can, (2) enamels dark yellow, grey-and-brown camo scheme on top, (3) acrylic matte varnish to make the underground bulletproof for the weathering step, (4) wash of thinned oils, (5) pigment base, heavy under the fenders, light on top, (6) hairpray fixation of the pigment layer, (7) enamel matte varnish finish to fix it all up for eternity. The dio base is a wood and cardboard section of highway with featured display, electrical cabinet and highway light, all scratch built from Evergreen profiles and sheet styrene. The honor of the reader goes to him/her who identifies what the lamp was made of (and who read this journal up to here). The figure is a customized ‘German’ tanker from an old Academy kit. I used green stuff to model his tank helmet and parka. More on that in the WiP thread. All road signs and pictures were printed on decal paper on my inktjet printer and blended using acrylic varnish. This is - in summary - a very nice kit. The level of detail is exquisite (what others do in PE, MENG does in plastic, so ideal for an OOB build) and given the time necessary builds into a great model of this infamous Russian MBT. Definitely not my last MENG kit! I hope you like it! Louis’ Empire of Japan GB is next on the bench! @lgardner Happy modeling! PS: Special thanks go to my friend @afrikaneer for the weathering tips!
In-Box Review1⁄35Russian MBT T-72B3Russian Main Battle Tank T-72B3 by: Ian Barraclough [ BARRA733 ]IntroductionNumber 28 of Meng Models Tyrannosaurus Series arrives in a deep box with high quality, attractive artwork on the front that would give some of Tamiya’s great box art pieces a run for their money. I do think Meng have missed a trick by not choosing one of the bright schemes from the Russian Tank Biathlon for the box top; but one of these is shown on the box side and shown in one of the 5-sided profile in the painting guide. My box arrived slightly crushed but more about that later. Inside the box is: 1. A 24-page instruction manual (36 steps) including a detailed vehicle description; acknowledgment of Gur Khan Publishing House input and 5 colour profiles. There’s also a paint colour guide for Meng and AK Interactive colours. 2. Upper and lower hull parts. 3. Upper turret. 3. 23 sprues of dark green plastic, individually bagged in clear poly bags 4. Two small sheets of photo etch (Grilles and wheel mask). 5. A clear sprue. 6. Rubber track ends (7 sprues). 7. Decal sheet and rope (for cable). 8. 1 Sprue of softer (vinyl?) plastic for mantlet cover and fuel drum piping. 9. Track building parts (sprue J) and suspension adjustment scan of the instructions shows the now ‘regular method of building AFVs: lower hull and running gear; upper hull and then turret. Steps 1 through 9 detail the lower hull. It’s good to see Meng including working suspension and even a suspension alignment tool to ensure all wheels are level. For those of you that have built the Meng T90 the tracks will be familiar to you. They build up in sections of six, using three different supplied tools to ensure a speedy build. I almost enjoy building these individual tracks… almost. The upper hull is covered in steps 10 to 25 and should provide no surprises. The parts are stunningly detailed, although the choice of dark green for the plastic means that you have to look hard to see it. I had to put some serious lighting up to get the detail to show in the pictures. Some of the parts are very fine and delicate and, as the sprues do not have any padding (as per some of the other manufacturers) some of the parts in my kit were damaged or had been knocked off the sprues. Meng do not provide any hull interior parts but they do have two types of T-72 engines as separate kits. The large engine deck door is provided as a separate part so could be easily depicted open. Step 23 adds the tow rope – usefully Meng provide a 100mm marked ruler opposite this step to ensure you get the right length. I would have liked to have seen the option to have the fuel drum brackets(F7) provided as folded, as seen on the Tank Biathlon pictures – sadly the fuel drums are in two halves each so will need a lot of clean-up to hide seams. Strangely one of the instruction call outs in the fuel drum construction (step 24) points to the completed fuel drum and states ‘Must fill’… I think this could cause a fire hazard! The gun and turret are dealt with in steps 26 – 36: the main gun is provided in 7 parts with the two long barrel lengths provided as 2 halves. This will again take some cleaning up and careful alignment to ensure a straight barrel. The gun mantlet is provided as soft vinyl so the gun should be able to be moved up and down (whilst making tank noises of course). The gunner’s primary sight is provided for the turret interior, which is prominent with the gunner’s hatch open. I would have also liked to have seen parts for the commander’s sight as again this can be seen with the commander’s hatch open. Parts are provided for the hatch interiors. The turret boxes are provided as 5 separate side and will require patience when building, but should build up into very detailed representations. The commander’s cupola an anti-aircraft MG take up 5 instruction steps on their own – this should give you an idea of the amount of detail in this kit! The AA MG can be posed in two positions depending on the parts used but is not moveable. The final step attaches the turret to the hull and also adds the optional driver’s splash guard – a very nice heard grumblings on the modelling grapevine about there being no etched detail parts in this kit – as an etched brass addict myself I was quite surprised to hear that a modern kit was being released with no etched brass parts, but I can assure you that they are not needed here – the finesse and detail on the plastic is probably the best I’ve seen – period. Some may want to invest in an aftermarket barrel; if it wasn’t an in-box review for the build I would probably do the same. I would like to have seen the engine included, but having seen it recently for sale at a show I think it would add too much onto the price of the kit for something that might not even be used. I hope now that Meng will add the T-72B3M (B4) to the series – although I don’t think that this would be too much additional work for those of us that are willing to have a go at some scratch building. I’m sure the AM guys will soon be all over this A T72! Exquisitely detailed with working suspension, individual link working tracks that are easy to build and good colour choices (Google ‘tank biathlon’).Lows: Multi part gun may cause alignment issues. Poor protection for very delicate parts on Another excellent release from Meng, possibly their best yet. Where's that Lime Green Paint.......Percentage Rating95% Scale: 1:35 Mfg.
